The Foreign Resort is a kind of musical escape that
sounds as if The Cure and Sonic Youth caught up with one another
over a couple of cocktails in Copenhagen. That’s probably
because when The Foreign Resort formed in Denmark three years ago,
singer Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen showed his songs to the rest of
the band while the influences of Robert Smith, Thurston Moore and
Jack Daniels swam in the back of his mind.
While resorts are known for being relaxing, The Foreign Resort
is a bit more restless – with resonant vocals riding atop
frayed guitars and a defiant rhythm section of Morten Hansen and
Rasmus Steen. Drummer Morten Hansen, guitarist Henrik Fischlein
and singer Mikkel Borbjerg Jakobsen were long-time friends with
a shared interest in shoegaze music. In the summer of 2006, the
group accosted Rasmus Steen on the streets of Copenhagen, hijacking
him as The Foreign Resort’s new bassist.
February 2009 saw the Danish release of The Foreign Resort’s
debut album, “Offshore,” in cooperation with the classic
Copenhagen vinyl store “Smukstoej”. “It’s
interesting to see how over the last couple of years, old dusty
record players are getting ‘dogged out’ from storage
rooms and basements,” said the band’s lead singer
on why The Foreign Resort is excited about the vinyl version of
the “Offshore” album. “That’s the tendency
we’re tailgating onto. And of course it is a childhood dream
to release vinyl.” Splitting the album into two sides also
emphasizes the two moods of “Offshore” – the
extroverted radio songs of Side A and the more introspective and
intense feeling of Side B.
While The Foreign Resort hit the road in Denmark, Germany and
United States, the Danish music press lauded the record:
“The Foreign Resort has with great international sound
carefully measured the balance between the high waving and the
fragile.” – Gaffa Magazine
“Expressively, well done, meaningful and spell-binding”
– diskant.dk.
“Offshore” was produced by Bo Karlsson and mastered
by Jan Eliasson (Spleen United, The Raveonettes) The album is
released by Flat Ape Music and is so far distributed in Denmark
through Labelkollektivet, in the USA through Three Ring Records
and in Italy through Black Nutria.
